President's Report

Greg miller, P.E.

NJ ASHRAE Members,

I’d like to welcome you all back from our summer recess as we start off the 2025-2026 Society year! I’m grateful to be serving as your president for this term, and hope to put together some useful, engaging events. Our goal as always is to provide you value for your membership, and I hope to deliver that through relevant technical sessions, fun networking opportunities, and industry leading resources for you to lean on.

Of course, we depend on our members, to help drive ASHRAE. I want to thank you all for your participation so far. I urge that you help turn the NJ chapter into the chapter you want it to be. Contribute. Volunteer. Engage with other members and our committee chair people. Perhaps most important is your feedback so we can provide the kinds of events and information that would be relevant to you.

Please keep an eye open for our upcoming events. Alongside the monthly dinner meetings we have some exciting networking events I would love to see you all at. Along side our yearly golf outing we are planning joint events with other societies, happy hours, student engagement with our local colleges, technical tours, and more. We will be communicating the details of these events throughout the year in the thermogram, so make sure to subscribe.

Thank you to all of our members who make this possible! And Thank you to our executive board, board of governors, and committee chair people who work so hard  to make each year of ASHRAE a success. See you all at the 1st meeting!

Greg Miller, PE

President, 2025-2026

ASHRAE New Jersey Chapter.

GOVERNMENT AFFAIRS

ASHRAE Offers Expertise and Assistance Following Legionnaires’ Disease Outbreak in New York City

Over the past several weeks, a major outbreak of Legionnaires’ Disease has affected the residents of Central Harlem in New York City, with 3 fatalities and 90 total cases to date. Legionnaires’ Disease is a type of pneumonia caused by the bacteria Legionella, which can grow in warm water between 77113 degrees Fahrenheit. ASHRAE Standard 188, Legionellosis: Risk Management for Building Water Systems, was created to help building owners mitigate the risk of this bacteria growth. Both New York City and New York State require certain building owners’ water management plans to align with some sections of Standard 188 but do not currently incorporate the full standard. The city health department plans to adopt stricter rules for Legionella risk management early next year, with increased penalties for noncompliant building owners and a new requirement for bacteria sampling to be conducted by a certified lab. On August 11, ASHRAE President Bill McQuade sent a letter to the New York City Acting Health Commissioner offering technical expertise and assistance as the city responds to the public health crisis, which can be found here.

Reps. Tonko and Fitzpatrick Reintroduce Bill to Improve Indoor Air Quality

On September 3, Congressmen Paul D. Tonko (D-NY) and Brian Fitzpatrick (R-PA) reintroduced their “Indoor Air Quality and Healthy Schools Act.” This bipartisan legislation, which is supported by ASHRAE, would provide the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) with the authority and resources to better protect public health from poor indoor air quality. The legislation would also establish a regularly updated national assessment of indoor air quality (IAQ) in schools and childcare facilities and provide technical assistance and guidelines to improve the IAQ conditions of these facilities. A press release concerning the legislation is available here, and the legislation can be viewed here.
