Presenter's Bio:

Ron Heymann has over 40 years of experience in the design, application and sales of motion control and other automation products including VFD’s, Servo’s, Vision Systems and Sensors in the Industrial and HVAC markets.  As a Sr. Regional Sales Manager for ABB, Ron has had territory management responsibility of the entire HVAC VFD product line for the last 18 years.  Along with his dedicated Channel Partners, Ron is responsible for driving sales growth by providing VFD application and product training to Consulting Engineers, Facility Managers, End Users, and Contractors.  Those efforts are focused on how VFD’s improve the efficiency of HVAC and electrical distribution systems to meet industry programs and standards like LEED and IEEE-519.

President's Report

ASHRAE New Jersey Chapter President 2024-2025

It is now May and spring is in full bloom. We have already seen unseasonably high temperatures here in New Jersey and air conditioners are starting to turn on. The light green hues of fresh foliage infills colder landscapes where bare bone tree once stood, now concealing the hills and woodlands with a warm embrace.  Pollen gently coats our vehicles along with every other outside surface with a delicate, neon dusting. The sounds of spring birds singing and kids playing outdoors fill the warming air, occasionally interrupted by the buzz of air-cooled compressors kicking on. Memorial day is just a handful of weeks away, and with it the unofficial start of summer. Soon enough, we will all be running to the Jersey shore, our favorite lakes and trails to hike, enjoying ice cream and other summer treats with friends and family far and near. Summer’s scorching sun and heat will soon be upon us, but for now let us enjoy the spring a little longer and embrace our NJ ASHRAE community for one more meeting and other planned events to come. 

This month’s dinner meeting will be held on Tuesday May 13, 2025 at the Delta Hotel located at 515 US-1 South, Iselin, NJ. Cocktail & networking hour starts at 5:00 PM followed by our dinner meeting and technical presentation starting at 6:00 PM. This month’s topic is VFD Technology, Harmonics and More, presented by Ron Heymann from ABB.  One of my chapter goals for this year is to increase meeting attendance so I hope to see as many of you at this month’s meeting as possible for another great topic! If you plan on attending, please make sure RSVP early as possible on our chapter’s website so that we can coordinate space and dinners. I Hope to see you there!

It has truly been an honor to have served as your NJ ASHRAE Chapter’s president for the 2024-05’ year. We still have some goals to meet and are always on the lookout for new volunteers to serve on our Board of Governors and to help Chair Committees. For anyone interested, please reach out to me or any other Officer/BOG member for additional information. Thanks again to all our committed volunteers, committees, members and guests. I hope to get membership way up this year so please continue to spread the word to friends and colleagues to consider becoming members if they are not already. As we shift on from May into the sunnier hot days of summer, I hope you all stay cool out there.

Committee Updates

GOVERNMENT AFFAIRS

New York State Building Code Council Votes to Recommend New All-Electric Building Requirements

On February 28, the New York State Fire Prevention and Building Code Council voted to recommend a draft update to the state building code that requires most new buildings to be all-electric starting in 2026. With this vote, New York is on track to become the first state to enact a ban on fossil fuels in new buildings. This requirement was previously mandated by the All-Electric Buildings Law, passed in 2023, which requires most new buildings to use only electric heat and appliances. However, the draft code does not include requirements for new homes to have onsite energy storage or electric vehicle chargers, which are listed in the state’s climate plan. Overall, buildings are the largest source of greenhouse gas emissions in New York, and the state uses more fossil fuels for heat and hot water than any other. NYSERDA, the state energy authority, estimates the proposed code update would add about $2 per square foot to the upfront cost of new homes but would save residents three times the amount over 30 years. EPA to Reconsider Rules that Restrict Higher-GWP Refrigerants

U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Administrator Lee Zeldin announced that the agency will reconsider the Technology Transition rule. The Technology Transition final rule, as part of the AIM Act and issued in October 2023, restricts the use of higher global warming potential (GWP) HFCs in new refrigeration, air conditioning, and heat pump (RACHP) equipment. The rule requires new refrigeration systems to use lower GWP refrigerants with sector-specific timelines between 2025 and 2027. More information on the announcement be found here.

Community Service Event

One of our Chapter’s goals for the 2024-25 year is to give back in the form of community service by way of volunteering. As Committee Chair for Community Service, I am hoping to get NJ ASHRAE members out at some volunteering events. As we cruise into spring, approaching earth day, I wish to give back to the community by cleaning up. Our first volunteering opportunity will be for Denville’s Annual Rockaway River Cleanup scheduled for Saturday May 10, 2025 (Rain day May 17^th).

Scholarships

Scholarships are awarded based on the following and for the academic year following the application deadline beginning with the fall semester.  Re-applications will be accepted from former scholarship applicants and recipients provided they meet current scholarship criteria. Students may only receive one Society scholarship in any given year. Scholarship amounts awarded shall not exceed the direct annual cost of attending the educational institution (i.e. tuition, books, supplies, room and board, etc.) through graduation.

1. A cumulative grade point average (GPA) of at least 3.0 on a scale where 4.0 is the highest and/or a class standing of no less than the top 30% evidenced by an official transcript of grades or written statement from a school administrator.
2. Three letters of recommendation, including one from an instructor or faculty advisor, a current or past employer, and another character reference.  In the case of schools with an ASHRAE student branch, a letter from the faculty advisor of that branch may be one of the three letters of recommendation.

3. Potential service to the HVAC and/or refrigeration profession.
