NJ ASHRAE Members,

With the recent cold weather, I’m sure everyone is more aware than ever of their heating system and energy consumption. I can rest assured knowing the heating systems I rely on are reliable and efficient since they were designed by some of our very own members!

I want to thank everyone who came out to the joint meeting with the MCANJ and NJSPE. I was a great event and networking opportunity as always, and I look forward to attending again next year. This month’s meeting is the 2^nd Tuesday of the month so our members at the AHR Las Vegas show can also attend. I hope to hear all about the show from those who went this year.

Thank you all for your participation in ASHRAE. Be on the look out for upcoming events in our thermogram. If anyone is looking to get more involved with the local chapter let myself or any one of the board members know. We are always looking for help growing the chapter.

YEA Event

ASHRAE New Jersey held our 2nd Happy Hour of the season last month at Brick House Tavern in Neptune. It was a great night of networking and fun with the young professionals that contribute to the chapter. Stay tuned for the next Happy Hour as it might be closer to your home!

ASHRAE Comments on New York City Proposed Rule

for Refrigerant Safety Standards

On January 5, ASHRAE President Bill McQuade submitted comments regarding a proposed rule from the New York City Department of Buildings that would add new sections to the city’s mechanical code regulations for refrigeration systems that reference ASHRAE Standard 15-2022, Safety Standard for Refrigeration Systems, Standard 15.2-2022, Safety Standard for Refrigeration Systems in Residential Applications, and Standard 34-2022, Designation and Safety Classification of Refrigerants. The letter requests that the city update those references to the current 2024 editions of the standards, rather than the 2022 editions.

New York State Law Ends Free Natural Gas

Hookups for Residential Buildings

On December 19, New York Gov. Kathy Hochul signed into law Senate Bill 8417, ending the “100-foot rule” for natural gas hookups for new residential buildings. This rule, in place since the 1980s, prevented utility companies from charging for new natural gas hookups for new homes if the building or development was within 100 feet of an existing gas line. The rule was originally intended to incentivize the use of natural gas for home heating instead of coal, and the new law similarly incentivizes the transition in new construction to electricity. Natural gas hookups will still be allowed for new construction, but they must be paid for by the individual customer. Analysis by RMI, a nonpartisan nonprofit focused on energy and climate issues, estimates the new law could save utility ratepayers statewide approximately $200 million per year on their electricity bills.

Scholarships

Scholarships are awarded based on the following and for the academic year following the application deadline beginning with the fall semester.  Re-applications will be accepted from former scholarship applicants and recipients provided they meet current scholarship criteria. Students may only receive one Society scholarship in any given year. Scholarship amounts awarded shall not exceed the direct annual cost of attending the educational institution (i.e. tuition, books, supplies, room and board, etc.) through graduation.

1. A cumulative grade point average (GPA) of at least 3.0 on a scale where 4.0 is the highest and/or a class standing of no less than the top 30% evidenced by an official transcript of grades or written statement from a school administrator.
2. Three letters of recommendation, including one from an instructor or faculty advisor, a current or past employer, and another character reference.  In the case of schools with an ASHRAE student branch, a letter from the faculty advisor of that branch may be one of the three letters of recommendation.
